The obby (obstacle course) genre is perhaps the most saturated category on Roblox. Tens of thousands of obby games compete for attention, and most are functionally indistinguishable — a series of colored blocks leading to a victory platform. Breaking through this wall of sameness requires something genuinely different. This case study follows an obby game that found its edge not through better level design, but by handing level design over to the players themselves. By building a robust user-generated content (UGC) system, the game transformed from another forgettable platformer into a self-sustaining creative economy with retention metrics that rival games in far less competitive genres.

The Obby Market Challenge

By late 2025, the obby genre on Roblox had reached extreme saturation. Data from RoLearn's Genre Opportunities page showed obby consistently scoring among the lowest in opportunity — high supply, fragmented demand, and fierce competition for every player. The average obby game saw fewer than 50 CCU, and even well-built obbies rarely sustained more than a few thousand.

The fundamental problem was content exhaustion. A traditional obby ships with a fixed set of levels. Players complete them, and then what? Unlike simulators with infinite progression or fighting games with PvP replayability, obbies have a natural endpoint. Players finish the course and leave. Retention is structurally limited by the amount of content the developer can produce.

The development team — a three-person studio with experience in Roblox tycoon games — recognized this problem during their initial market research. Their insight was simple but powerful: if one developer can't produce enough content to retain players indefinitely, what if a million players could?

UGC Level Creation: The Core Differentiator

The game launched with 50 developer-created levels as a baseline experience, but the real feature was an in-game level editor that let any player create, publish, and share their own obby courses. The editor was designed with obsessive attention to accessibility:

  • Block palette: 200+ block types with different physics properties (bouncy, slippery, breakable, moving, disappearing)
  • Snap-to-grid: All pieces snapped to a grid, eliminating the frustration of imprecise placement

The editor ran entirely within the Roblox client — no external tools required. A player could go from playing levels to creating their own in under 30 seconds. This zero-friction transition between player and creator was critical. Every player was a potential content creator, and the easier the transition, the more creators would emerge.

We didn't want to build a game with a level editor attached. We wanted to build a level editor with a game attached. The creation tools are the product — the obby gameplay is how people experience what others create.

The Player-Created Content Economy

Within the first month, players had published over 15,000 custom levels. By month three, that number exceeded 80,000. The volume of content was staggering — far more than any development team could produce, and far more varied. Players created everything from traditional difficulty obbies to creative art pieces, troll levels, speed runs, and collaborative challenges designed for groups.

The game implemented a discovery and curation system to surface the best content:

  • Featured tab: Developer-curated selection of exceptional community levels, updated weekly
  • Trending tab: Algorithmically sorted by plays-per-hour and like ratio
  • New tab: Chronological feed giving every new level initial exposure
  • Search and tags: Players tagged levels by difficulty, theme, and style, enabling filtered discovery
  • Creator profiles: Each creator had a public profile showing all their levels, total plays, and subscriber count

The most impactful addition was the subscriber system. Players could subscribe to their favorite creators and receive notifications when new levels were published. This created a direct relationship between creators and their audiences, mimicking the dynamics of YouTube or TikTok within the game itself.

Moderation at Scale

UGC at scale inevitably produces moderation challenges. The team implemented a multi-layer moderation system:

  1. Automated scanning: All published levels were scanned for inappropriate imagery, text, and block arrangements that formed offensive shapes
  2. Community reporting: Players could report levels with a single button tap, and levels with high report rates were automatically hidden pending review
  3. Creator reputation: A hidden trust score tracked each creator's moderation history. High-trust creators had their levels published instantly; low-trust creators' levels were queued for manual review
  4. Volunteer moderator program: 50 community volunteers with access to a moderation dashboard handled the bulk of daily review, overseen by the development team

The moderation system handled approximately 500 reports per day at peak, with 85% resolved within 2 hours. Keeping the content safe while allowing creative freedom was an ongoing balance, but the multi-layer approach prevented the worst outcomes without stifling creator expression.

Monetization Through Creator Tools

The Pro Editor gamepass achieved a remarkable 8.2% conversion rate — more than triple the industry average for Roblox gamepasses. The team attributed this to the gamepass's direct connection to creative output: players who had invested time in creation tools genuinely wanted more powerful tools to improve their levels.

Developer products provided a recurring revenue stream: seasonal block packs, effect bundles, and premium decorative elements. The data showed a clear split in retention patterns:

  • Players who only played levels: Day-7 retention of 15%, Day-30 retention of 5% — roughly standard for the obby genre
  • Players who created at least one level: Day-7 retention of 42%, Day-30 retention of 24% — nearly 5x the retention of pure players
  • Players who published 3+ levels: Day-7 retention of 61%, Day-30 retention of 38% — approaching retention numbers typically seen in MMOs

The implication was clear: the game's primary retention strategy was converting players into creators. Every nudge, tutorial, and UI prompt was optimized to get players into the editor. The game placed a prominent "Create" button on the main menu, showed "Create your own version" prompts after completing levels, and rewarded first-time creators with exclusive cosmetic items.

The game's growth trajectory reflected the compounding effect of UGC:

Note that even as CCU settled from its peak, the active creator count remained robust and the level library continued growing. Each new level was a new piece of content that could attract and retain players. The game's content library expanded faster than any development team could match, creating a self-reinforcing cycle: more content attracted more players, more players meant more creators, and more creators meant more content.

Lessons for UGC-Driven Games

  1. Creation tools must be zero-friction. Every tap between "I want to create" and "I'm creating" is a dropout point. The editor should be as intuitive as stacking blocks — because on Roblox, that's literally what it is.
  2. Converting players to creators is your most important metric. Creator retention is 3-5x player retention. Every feature, prompt, and incentive should nudge players toward their first creation.
  3. Discovery determines ecosystem health. If players can't find good community content, they leave. If creators can't get their content seen, they stop creating. Invest as much in discovery and curation as you do in the creation tools themselves.
  4. Moderation scales with community trust. You can't manually review every piece of content at scale. Build automated systems for the baseline, community reporting for the middle layer, and volunteer moderators for nuanced decisions.
  5. Monetize the creator, not just the player. Creator-focused gamepasses convert at higher rates because they're tied to creative expression and identity, not just convenience. A creator buying better tools feels like an investment, not a transaction.
