Guide

Rewarded video ads represent a significant new revenue stream for Roblox developers. Since their full platform rollout in mid-2025, thousands of games have integrated ads alongside traditional gamepass monetization — and the results have been compelling. Games that implement rewarded ads well are seeing 15-40% increases in total revenue without measurable impact on player retention. This guide covers everything you need to know: eligibility, implementation, placement strategy, reward design, and how to measure success.

What Are Rewarded Video Ads?

Rewarded video ads are opt-in advertisements that players choose to watch in exchange for an in-game reward. Unlike banner ads or interstitial ads that interrupt gameplay, rewarded ads are player-initiated. The player sees an offer — "Watch a 30-second video to earn 500 coins" — and decides whether to accept. This opt-in model is critical to their success: players feel in control, and the exchange feels fair.

Roblox launched its Immersive Ads program in stages throughout 2024-2025, with rewarded video becoming broadly available to qualifying developers by Q3 2025. The system is built into the Roblox engine, meaning developers do not need external ad SDKs or third-party integrations. Implementation happens entirely through the Roblox API and Studio tooling.

Eligibility Requirements

Not every game can enable rewarded video ads immediately. Roblox has established eligibility criteria to ensure ad quality and player safety:

  • Account verification: The developer must have a verified Roblox account (ID or phone verification).
  • Minimum engagement: The game must have sustained at least 100 daily active users (DAU) over the past 30 days.
  • Content guidelines: The game must comply with Roblox Community Standards and not contain content inappropriate for the ad-serving audience.
  • Age rating: Games rated for all ages or 9+ are eligible. Games with 13+ or 17+ ratings have more limited ad inventory availability.
  • Premium Payouts enrollment: The developer must be enrolled in the Roblox Premium Payouts program (or equivalent creator earnings program).

If your game does not yet meet the 100 DAU threshold, focus on growing your player base first. Use the Trending page to study what successful games in your genre are doing to attract and retain players.

Implementation Steps

Implementing rewarded video ads in your game involves four main steps:

Step 1: Enable Ads in Game Settings. In Roblox Studio, navigate to Game Settings and enable the Immersive Ads option. This registers your game with the ad-serving system and makes the rewarded video API available in your scripts.

Step 2: Create Ad Placement Points. Decide where in your game the ad offer will appear. This is a design decision, not a technical one — the API call itself is straightforward. You will use the PolicyService to check if the current player is eligible to see ads (some regions and age groups are restricted), then display a custom UI prompt offering the reward.

Step 3: Handle the Ad Lifecycle. When the player accepts, call the rewarded video API to show the ad. Listen for the completion callback — this fires when the player has watched the full video. Only grant the reward after the completion callback confirms the view. Handle edge cases: the player closes the ad early (no reward), the ad fails to load (show a graceful error), or the player is not eligible (hide the ad offer entirely).

Step 4: Implement Cooldowns and Caps. Set a cooldown between ad views (recommended: 5-10 minutes minimum) and a daily cap per player (recommended: 5-8 views per day). These limits protect the player experience and comply with Roblox ad policies.

Placement Strategy: Where to Offer Ads

The placement of your ad offer — where in the game flow players encounter it — has a dramatic impact on engagement rates. The best placements feel natural and non-intrusive. The worst placements feel desperate and disruptive.

High-Performance Placements

  • After death or failure: When a player dies or fails a challenge, offering a rewarded ad for a free revive, retry, or resource recovery feels natural. The player is already paused from gameplay and motivated to continue. This placement typically achieves 25-40% opt-in rates.
  • Between rounds or levels: Natural transition points — between rounds, levels, or stages — are ideal for ad offers. The player is already in a waiting state and the ad does not interrupt active gameplay. Opt-in rates: 15-25%.
  • In shops and reward menus: Adding a "watch ad for free X" option alongside paid items in your shop creates an accessible alternative for non-paying players. This placement converts at 10-20% but has high strategic value because it serves players who would otherwise generate zero revenue.
  • Daily bonus multiplier: Offering an ad to double the daily login reward combines two proven mechanics (daily rewards + ads) into one. Players are already interacting with the reward UI, making the ad offer contextually relevant. Opt-in rates: 30-50%.

Placements to Avoid

  • Mid-gameplay interruptions: Never pause active gameplay to show an ad offer. This destroys flow and feels manipulative.
  • Forced frequency: Showing the ad offer every 60 seconds annoys players even if the ads are optional. Space offers at least 5 minutes apart.
  • Spawn point bombardment: Showing an ad offer immediately when a player spawns or joins the game creates a negative first impression.

Reward Design: What Players Get

The reward for watching an ad must be valuable enough to justify 30 seconds of the player's time, but not so valuable that it undermines your gamepass monetization. This balance is the most important design decision in your ad implementation.

The ideal ad reward is worth approximately 5-10 minutes of normal gameplay progression. Less than that feels insulting. More than that cannibalizes your premium offerings.

Effective reward types include:

  • Currency: A fixed amount of in-game currency. Calculate based on your economy — the reward should equal roughly 5-10 minutes of active earning.
  • Temporary boosts: A 15-30 minute 2x multiplier for XP, currency, or speed. Time-limited rewards feel valuable without permanently accelerating progression.
  • Consumable items: Revive tokens, energy refills, loot crate keys, or power-ups that the player would otherwise need to earn or purchase.
  • Cosmetic tickets: Tokens that accumulate toward cosmetic rewards. This creates a long-term ad engagement loop — players watch ads over multiple days to earn exclusive skins.

Balancing Ads with Gamepass Revenue

The biggest concern developers have about rewarded ads is cannibalization — will players stop buying gamepasses because they can get rewards for free by watching ads? The data from 2025-2026 suggests the answer is no, provided you follow two rules:

Rule 1: Ads supplement, not substitute. Ad rewards should offer consumable or temporary benefits. Gamepasses should offer permanent, exclusive benefits. A player can watch ads for 500 coins, but the "Permanent 2x Coins" gamepass provides value that no amount of ad-watching can replicate. Keep these lanes separate.

Rule 2: Cap ad value below gamepass value. If your cheapest gamepass costs 100 R$ and provides roughly 10,000 coins worth of lifetime value, your daily ad cap should not allow a player to earn more than 1,000-2,000 coins per day from ads. This makes gamepasses the obviously superior option for serious players while keeping ads attractive for casual or non-paying players. Use the Revenue Simulator to model how different ad reward levels affect your overall revenue mix.

Performance Benchmarks

Understanding expected performance helps you set realistic goals and identify optimization opportunities. The following benchmarks are based on aggregated data from Roblox games running rewarded video ads during Q3 2025 through Q1 2026:

MetricGenre: SimulatorGenre: TycoonGenre: RPGGenre: Obby
Avg. Opt-In Rate22%18%20%28%
Avg. CPM (USD)$6.50$5.80$7.20$4.50
Ads/Player/Day2.82.22.53.4
Revenue Lift vs No Ads+22%+18%+25%+35%
Retention Impact (D7)-0.5%-0.3%-0.8%+0.2%

Notable observations: Obbies show the highest opt-in rates because natural pause points (between levels, after death) are more frequent. RPGs show the highest CPM because the audience tends to be older and more valuable to advertisers. The retention impact across all genres is negligible — well-implemented rewarded ads do not hurt retention.

Player Sentiment Management

Even though rewarded ads are opt-in, some players react negatively to any form of advertising in games they play. Managing this sentiment is important for maintaining community trust.

Be transparent about why ads exist. A brief in-game notice — "Watching ads helps support the game's development and keeps it free for everyone" — goes a long way. Avoid language that pressures players to watch ads. Never make the game feel worse for players who choose not to engage with ads. The ad-free experience should be complete and enjoyable on its own.

Monitor your game's reviews and community channels for ad-related complaints after launch. If players report ads as intrusive, reduce the frequency or visibility of ad offers. A 5% reduction in opt-in rate is worth it if it prevents a community backlash that damages your reputation and ratings.

Compliance and Policies

Roblox enforces strict policies around ad implementation. Violating these policies can result in ad revenue suspension or account action:

  • Never simulate a fake ad completion or grant rewards without a verified view callback.
  • Do not create mechanics that require ad views for core gameplay progression (ads must always be optional).
  • Respect age-based restrictions — some players are not eligible for ads based on their region or age group. Always check eligibility before showing the ad offer UI.
  • Do not manipulate ad placement to maximize accidental clicks or views.
  • Follow all applicable children's advertising regulations (COPPA in the US, equivalent laws in other regions).

Measuring Success

After implementing rewarded ads, track these metrics weekly to ensure they are delivering value without harming the player experience:

  • Opt-in rate: The percentage of eligible players who watch at least one ad per session. Target: 15-25%.
  • Completion rate: The percentage of started ads that are watched to completion. Target: 85%+ (below this suggests the reward is not compelling enough).
  • Revenue per DAU: Total ad revenue divided by daily active users. Compare against your gamepass revenue per DAU to understand the relative contribution.
  • Retention impact: Compare Day-7 retention for players who watch ads versus those who do not. If ad-watching players retain worse, your implementation may be too aggressive.
  • Gamepass conversion: Monitor whether gamepass purchase rates change after ads are introduced. A drop of more than 5% warrants investigation.
